Actual Club Anecdote
A 'stand ard'
January Sunday evening drink saw the formation of an idea, originating
from wishful thinking, to what is now slowly becoming a reality. JP
from Borrisoleigh and Eoghan
from Ennistymon wanted to play GAA games regularly, once the days started
to get longer, even though they were 1000km away from the Irish epicentre.
A plan was hatched with great apple-pie in the sky hopes of having Jamesie
/ Ger Loughnane or Nicky / Declan Ryan duo of throwing in the ball for
the inaugural Unterfranken Championship final. Slowly but, surely suggestions
of possible players, definite pitches, coaxed administrators, cajoled
officers, web pages, posters, European GAA headquarters affiliation were
all thrown and bandied about. Posters were conceived, schedules were loosely
pencilled in and spirits were floating!! After two hours of 'hard hard
hard' brainstorming beer mats were being handed in, accounts settled and
da boyz ventured back into the frosty crisp Würzburg night with "St Kilians"
beginning its sudden infanthood!! "A terrible beauty is born"
Origins of the Club Name
It
was no coincidence that they decided on the name "St Kilian" for the club.
In the distant past Irish missionaries were seen to bring their "civilisation"
to these parts of Europe and the rest of the world. In this tradition
St Kilian had come in the 8th Century to Wuerzburg and indeed Bavaria
to bring the light of Christianity to 'hedonistic pagan Bavarians'!! Now
some 13 centuries later two men , one from the Premier County, and the
other the home
of Biddy Early sought to bring the light of the the GAA-the hurl, the
sliothar, the O'Neills football to Wuerzburg. St Kilian is still revered
in these parts( although they did cut off his head!).
The Crest
|
|
|
The
club crest shows a jagged, red and white coloured shield. This is
typical for the region of Unterfranken where Würzburg is located.
The crest shows the Hurleys and the ball used for Hurling and Gaelic
Football. As reminiscence of Ireland the shamrock is shown as well.
For all of you that are able to read we also put the club name in
!
