The Saw Doctors - A Different Kind Of World is an examination of one of the most popular Irish bands of the last two decades.

In 1991 award-winning director Steven Lock's acclaimed documentary Sing A Powerful Song captured The Saw Doctors at the peak of their fame. Now twelve years, later he catches up with the band again, this time in New York, Tuam, Galway and Clare Island. Intimately capturing the band in concert and in session, on the road and at home The Saw Doctors - A Different Kind of World is a very special portrait of a very special and very different kind of band.

Director Steven Lock

Steven Lock is an award-winning writer, producer and director specialising in arts, music and entertainment programmes. After starting his career at Thames, he moved to Granada Television before starting his own independent company. He has worked with many, many bands from George Michael, The Stone Roses, The Happy Mondays, U2 and Simply Red and his documentary on David Bowie - An Earthling @ 50 won a prestigious Royal Television Society Award. In 2002 Steven relocated from the UK to Ireland.-

Synopsis

The Saw Doctors sing about their locale, in a manner familiar to fans of Bruce Springsteen, but before the Saw Doctors unheard of in Ireland. The result is a rich tapestry of songs which portray a real community in all its horrors and all its glories. Real songs about real people. West of Ireland Rock and Roll was never the same after The Saw Doctors and the band catalogue their times in a way that other artists can only aspire to. Their music's energy, compassion and celebration of a certain type of life is brought to the big screen by featuring performance and interviews with all the band's members, local comedians, politicians and a few of the band's many enamoured fans from the Brooklyn New York, to Tuam in the County of Galway.
