St Kilians Wuerzburg Irish Sports Club - the Pride of Unterfranken: St Kilians appeared in its second tournament of the year in Munich on the 9th of August. In it we teamed up with new club Nordrhein Westfalen Exiles under the chairmanship of fellow Tipperary man Paul Delahunty. A strong Wuerzburg setup with regulars JP McSherry, Owen McGuire, Ronan "every girl wants me" Slattery, and Niall "Bilko" Twomey were joined by rookies Trevor Bradna and Sean "Oral B" Nyham. In Munich we met up with "distant" Kilians members and Carlow natives Tadhg "I really want to organise a Stuttgart tournament" Kelly and Mike "Shitty Kilkenny colours" Kealy. A great omen for the day was the arrival of the brand new Exiles kit just before departing the hotel on Saturday morning. With high expectations we journeyed to the Sports ground in Trüddering. Under the captaincy of Tom Daly, we had group games against Luxembourg, Munich A, Frankfurt/ Hamburg and Rennes/ Barcelona. We recorded 2 wins and 2 losses 8 (see Owen's report) While we didn't get to the semi-finals we know that we played well enough to get to the final. We witnessed all the same a magnificent final between Munich A and the Luxembourg Langers….shite for them they did us out of a point). Congrats to Munich. They played great football in the final. After the tournament we (eventually) got to Augustiner Halle where the reception took place. Great acceptance speech there from Noel McKenna ( Munich captain) I didn't think it was possible to sound so smug!!!!! While we're disappointed about the results, we can all be proud of our performances. I think this combination of Exiles/ Kilians has a future and I look forward to the last round of the Euro league in The Hague where I think we will do even better. One great statistic was that we conceded no goals in the tournament. That's great credit to the backs and to our three rotating goalies, Niall, Tom and Ronan. A big thanks to "Man On the line" Mike Hackett. for his encouragement and vocal support on the day.
